Books mean everything to me. German literature especially. There are a number of quaint offerings from German authors telling stories about various aspects of German life. German crime seems to be the top genre in literature there. In the world we live in today, there's always a different way of telling stories we want to hear.
Why not add in a bit of satire?
Well, for today's Matteo's World of German, I'll introduce you to Bavaria's very own Rita Falk.

Here's a new word for you.
Winterkartoffelknödel.
Auf Englisch, this means winter potato dumpling.
Ask yourself this. Why would you call a crime novel "Winter Potato Dumpling"?
Let me explain.
Winterkartoffelknödel is a crime parody based in Munich. Whilst trying to solve a crime in his village, he has his parents to contend with. The name of the book comes from the dish in which Ebenhofer's mother cooks for him during the story. The novel is easy enough to understand; in fact, my copy is in large print, something which makes reading in German easier to follow. Through the book and the film, there is certainly a touch of Bavarian comedy. If you've seen Hubert & Staller (Hubert ohne Staller von Staffel 8), then you will know what I am talking about. Especially after some of the most recent pieces of German literature I've read, it was nice to have something light-hearted, good-humoured, and different.
What are your thoughts?
I am currently reading Homo faber by Max Frisch, so there'll be another book review coming your way again soon.
Bis bald!
